boot of VM hanging at X11 session startup

Post by jshafe01 »

Good Evening,

I am a new user with VB. I am attempting to load a VMDK file through VB. The boot phase seems to go until the x11 session start up (virtual machine is a linux OS) and then it just hangs with no further progress. I am struggling to figure out if there is a setting or something I need to enable in order for the virtual machine image to load. Would anyone be able to direct me to the proper documentation so I can resolve this?

Thanks!!

Last I checked there were hundreds of different linux OSes. Care to share which one it is?
Also no information provided that could help us to help you. Please read the Forum Posting Guide.

Yeah sorry, unfortunately I am not sure which version of Linux it is (lilo 2.7 or some such thing, never heard of it) and am trying to diagnose enough of the details to make a more informative post. Its not an image I created but rather one that is being used for a course and I am still working to gather more information.

OK lilo is a boot loader and can be used on just about anything. What I need to know is it knoppix, debian, fedora, that kind of thing and the version.
Was it installed from CD that came with a book? Somewhere it should tell you.
The minimum we need to know is the hosts system resources and the settings you used for the guest.

Ok, I have more information that will hopefully help. So the image was uploaded by the professor and does not have a huge amount of pedigree associated with it. Best I can tell from watching it boot is that it is Linux 2.4 (released sometime back in the 2001-2003 timeframe), uses LVM 1.0.8, etc. In the logs I also saw "Suse" which seems to correspond with openSuse as a version selectable when creating the machine.

I realize that is not a lot to go on.

I used the wizard in VB to create the virtual machine. It has 1024 MB base memory, 48 MB video memory, and has the network set to host-only.

My host system is Mac OSX 10.6.4, 4 GB RAM, 3.2 Mhz i3 processor, 1 TB of memory.

The package contains the following VMDK files: home.vmdk, root.vmdk, swap.vmdk. The package also has individual files with the extensions of nvram, vmsd, vmx, and vmxf

I appreciate the help and apologize for not having a more complete initial post.

Were there any build instructions? These are not native files to VirtualBox. They will work if installed properly, but these look like a specific type of build for a specific purpose and without the build instructions or an OVF file that would allow you to import them it may be really tricky if not impossible.
