Shared folders not working?

Post by drewwilkin »

I've followed all the instructions I can find. I've searched these forums. I have not found a solution to my problem. I'm sure it's a simple matter, though. Please help!

I am using Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex with VB 2.0.4_OSE. The VB is running WinBlows XP Professional with the latest patches.

I've tried creating several "shared" folders. I can see them on the Ubuntu side. I can create files in there. I cannot see the folders or the files inside on the WinBlows side. What am I doing wrong?

You must exact say, what you do. How should we help, if we dont konw exact, what you do?

Post guest config & exact approach. Messages / In- and Output word by word.

Exactly what I try:
Before I start the VB machine, I create the share. Under Settings, I go to shared folders, put in the path I want to share (/home/ishyhere/Documents/shared) and the name of that share (shared). I note that down in the help area it lists that I should use net use..., so I write that down to try it.
Start the machine...
Start --> Run... net use f: \\vboxsvr\shared... Nothing. No error message, nothing at all.
Start WinBlows Exploder and under Tools, choose Map Network Drive. I enter the drive I want to use (F:) and type in the server (\\vboxsvr\shared). "Attempting..." "The network path \\vboxsvr\shared could not be found."

Again, I know it's something simple I'm missing, but I'm getting sick and tired of having to upload things to Google Docs to be able to use them.

Did you install the guest additions (in the guest)?

Don't know. Probably not. Where can I find those?

With the guest running, go to devices -> "install guest additions" in the in the vbox window (you can hit host-home to bring it up. Host is probably the right control key and home is the home button). This will mount a virtual cdrom that contains the installer.
