Dear VirtualBox Community,

We want to install Windows XP ( SP3 ) into VirtualBox ( latest ) on Snow Leopard ( latest ) which is running from an External USB Hard Drive .

Are we able to execute the scenario with confidence ?

Intel iMac is operating Tiger ( 10.4.11 ) on the internal hard drive .
[ We are able to select Snow Leopard ( latest ) by holding the option key at boot-up or more permanently selecting the snow leopard partition on the Startup Disk pane in System Preferences ( and vice versa ) ] .

External USB Hard Drive is partitioned ( three ) where one partition is the full Snow Leopard ( latest ) install .

Are we making things too difficult for ourselves ?

We are able to use Windows 7 instead of Windows XP ( SP3 ) .

Your questions, queries, concerns and comments are welcome .

We seek your advice and suggestions before embarking on the adventure .

That external USB drive is going to put a bottleneck in performance because USB is considerably slower than SATA.

Fear . Of the unknown .

Tiger is the stable production engine in use .

Snow Leopard is the experimental upgrade and newer development engine in use .

Eventually ( internet time ), Snow Leopard shall become the stable production engine in use .

Your question is entirely mentionable . We understand that you would encourage us to consider ( and so not unthinkingly ignore ) the most efficient implementation . Thank you .

True . An acceptable performance degradation, for now .

We have had an easy time of VirtualBox to date . And we are new to the virtualisation game . We commend VirtualBox for making our computing lives considerably improved .

We have successfully implemented VirtualBox on Snow Leopard ( latest ) installed on an external USB connected hard drive .

We have successfully installed Windows XP ( sp3 ) and chosen Windows softwares on the VirtualBox implementation as described ( in the line above ) .

Matters of fuller Windows softwares functionality and wider mac systems hardware and software integration are in discovery .

So far, we operate unhindered but our demands ( of wider mac systems hardware and software integration ) beyond internet connection are nil .

We noted minor menu option changes to VirtualBox 3.2.8 between the guide writing ( and the earlier VirtualBox release in the guide use ) and the current release . . meaning some ( few ) mentioned features in the guide are now located under other VirtualBox main menu titles . One need not be concerned . VirtualBox appears to be better than ever before .
We are grateful for the deliberate mention of the 'guest additions' in the guide which deliver a worthy improvement to the matter of more seamless operation .
