Virtual Box USB support
Virtual Box USB support
Simple question, does VB support USB? The lousy Virtual PC 2007 from Microsoft does not support USB so dont waste your time if you need peripherals to work.
thanks, got it running and USB is great...I only have one pr
normally the right CTRL key will released the mouse but if you install the Guest Additions from the Device button up the top, you will be able to use your mouse across the host and guest.
How did you do it?
How did you get USB to work under VB? I'm missing some step.

Native Ubuntu
Would it be possible for VBox to do the same for VM Ubuntu that happens with native Ubuntu? When you put a USB item in, a screen icon comes up with enough functionality to do whatever you need to with it. Instead, with VBox, a host dialog box pops up.
The simple recipe
A little more experimentation solved this. For the seriously inexperienced here is the simple recipe, such as I need to solve a problem:
1) In VBox Settings, I had to add an empty filter - no filter is not the same as an empty filter.
2) Run VBox/Ubuntu
3) Plug in a USB and a Windows wizard comes up.
4) Let WinXP search for a driver for the "VirtualBox USB" - it finds it locally without any help
5) Let it install it
6) Take out the USB.
7) Restart Ubuntu by shutting it down internally and starting it with VBox.
Insert the USB and --- Voila! - The disk icon appears.
There may be some superfluous steps here, but at least it works.

Greetings. Has anyone encountered the following error ?

I get this when trying to access the VM settings. Pressing OK, the settings dialog appears normally, but is missing the USB category of settings in the left panel.
I've been having this problem since I installed v1.5.4 of VB. Previous version worked OK, as far as I can tell. Running on Windows XP Professional SP2

I was first informed of the new release from your post. And I have to report that after upgrading to 1.5.6, the problematic behavior has been corrected, at least on my system. I don't know if it made any difference but prior to the upgrade, I had removed 1.5.4 completely (with some minor regedit work and manual deletion of the two vbox*.sys drivers from the system32\drivers directory of Windows) and had returned to 1.5.2...j soimis wrote:Me too, I'm using 1.5.4 and 1.5.6 with no luck.
When I first saw this list, I was so excited, because it looks like an idiot-proof recipe to get USB working.
I appreciate this type of help, because it gives a step-by-step guide and leaves nothing to chance.
Unfortunately, I followed this to the letter, but no joy. I'm running v 1.5.4 do I just have the wrong version? Has this list of instructions been updated?
I'd love to get this to work, thanks for the help!

Are you trying to use an usb 1.1 device? I have tried this method with 3 sticks, one of them being usb 1.1. That device isn't installed properly in device manager on the Guest system.
