Shared folders shown as disconnected in 32-bit but not 64-bi

I'm having a problem with shared folders in a 64-bit guest (Windows 7): when mapping a shared folder as a network drive in Windows Explorer, the resulting network drive is shown as disconnected in 32-bit apps (Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player) but not in 64-bit apps (Windows Explorer, Notepad). 32-bit apps can browse the network drive though, even though it's showing to be disconnected. The same problem does not appear in VMware Player, so it doesn't appear to be an inherent Windows problem.

I've tried searching for this, but can't find anything. Is there a workaround so that 32-bit apps will show the network drive as connected? I've tried all networking modes as well as adding VBOXSRV and VBOXSVR to the hosts file.

VirtualBox 3.2.8 / Windows 7 RTM x64 host / Windows 7 RTM x64 guest.
