Hello All,
Yes, I was trying to install NT4 as guest on VBox 3.2.8 on WinXP SP3 host.
Creating the machine went fine. I inserted the boot CD.
First puzzle. NT4 (on this boot CD) seems to only support disks up to 8GB & partitions of 4GB. The hope would be that when NT4 SP6 would be installed later the OS can handle more disk space. (It does on another native NT4 PC).
Second (worse) puzzle. Boot from CD went fine and NT4 went into it's first reboot. After that it started the VGA splash screen (it went beyond the blue ascii screen) and then hung showing a little info window 'Windows NT setup. Setup is initializing'. After that it's frozen.
Any ideas what to do next?
Thanks,
Gert

Re: NT4 install hanging in VBox 3.2.8
I experienced the same behaviour. The NT4 installation first copies files in "DOS-mode" and then reboots to continue the installation with graphical userinterface. It blue-screens either after the first reboot (a second after showing the green GUI-background), or a few clicks later after selecting the network installation options. The host OS is Windows XP SP2, guest OS Windows NT4 Server. So I stepped back to VBox 3.1.8, same problem. Back to 3.1.2, still the same. But:
On an other machine I have Linux as Host running VBox 3.1.2 and the same Windows NT4 Server as guest OS. Everything is working fine (On this Linux host I installed the NT4-guest a few weeks ago). My first guess was that there is a problem with the XP-host system as a whole or in detail (same Core 2 Duo 2,2GHz-CPU but less memory...). My final try was to export the appliance in Linux-host-VBox and imported it in XP-host-VBox -- and It worked!
So maybe this narrows the misbehaviour down to the installation routine?
Regards, Jens

Re: NT4 install hanging in VBox 3.2.8
Hi Jens,
I found a second NT4 boot CD and tried again after wiping the old VM from disk. To my surprise this time it worked. So I can't really answer what caused the problem at the beginning and what changed to fix it. Kind of unsatisfying, but that's how it is. Well, in the end I have a working NT4 VM and that's OK for me.
I have another question which I'll post in separate topic.
Best,
Getr
