mounting USB Drives for P2V

OK,
I have virtual box on Mac and am trying to P2V two windows 2003 servers as guests.
I used Cristie Bare Machine Recovery to clone the machines to USB Drives.
I have virtual machines with windows 2003 installed that I want to restore the disk images to.
But, I cant get Virtualbox to recognize the USB drives.
Interestingly, I formatted the USB drives on a PC and they do not allow me to write to it from my Mac. if I mount them on the Mac and then unmount them, they will show up on the pull down menu but I cant make them accessible.
Suggestions on how I can make these drives accessible So I can finish this P2V transition.
BTW, I have the latest Osx and Virtualbox
