failed to open a session...

Post by loukingjr »

I've never seen this message before, a couple of my virtual machines close before they even attempt to power on. here's the error message:

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Machine
Interface: ISession {12f4dcdb-12b2-4ec1-b7cd-ddd9f6c5bf4d}

I have no idea why

I think we're experiencing the same problem. I posted about it at the same time!

By chance, have you taken any Apple updates recently? That's the only thing I can think of that has changed on my machine since this was running. No solution found yet.

actually I think I do know part of the problem. I had done a fresh install of snow leopard to an external drive in case something went wrong with my internal drive. when I tried accessing two out of the ten virtual machines I have setup, I got that message. turns out for some reason, the permissions weren't set correctly for the virtual machines folder. I'm not sure why it only affected two of them, but setting the read write permissions globally for VB's machines folder and it's contents fixed it.

Could you be a little more explicit with what you changed? I did what you think you meant but it didn't fix it here.

I'm thinking (hoping) that "Security Update 2010-005" messed with my privileges. Nothing else seems broken on mine and these machine have been working right along.

I'm working now. As a last resort I re-installed VirtualBox and now they're working again.
