I'm wanting to install XP to a new VM or re-install on an old VM, but I can't get either to work because the setup won't continue. The procedure gets to "Please wait while Setup copies files to your hard disk."

I've started in DOS mode, and ran Smartdrv, tried installing from the hard drive and CD (with passthrough enabled)...nothing so far has worked.

I'm using a MacBook, Snow Leopard, 2G of RAM, newest version of VirtualBox.

Please try to create an ISO of the CD and use that ISO or try a different install disc. I think there is something wrong with the disc itself or reading it from within VB.

Create a new ISO? How would I use it with VBox? As a CD?

Naturally. VB is capable of using both physical drives, as well as ISO images. See the User Manual for more information about the storage system.
