I have a Mac OS X Snow Server with static IP 192.168.1.10 and subnet 192.168.1.xx/255.255.255.0

I installed VB and Windows XP. and I am very impressed (I even installed the whole thing remotely). However I need to give the Windows XP guest a static IP because I am running IIS running a web based app.

When I start Windows though it gets a seemingly random IP address (like 10.xx.xx.xx). VB is setup as Nat. I tried changing the IP in the Network settings of Windows to 192.168.1.11 (which is the usual way to do this). Once I do that Windows loses connection to the internet and cannot be pinged.

Any FAQs how to setup the guest OS with a static IP?

Figured it out.

Change the Network of VB adapter 1 to Bridged
Turn off Windows firewall
Change the Network Local Connection of Windows to the desired static IP.

Yes, the machines must be in the same network, not on different sides of NAT. Using bridged mode, the vm is effectively in the same network as the LAN machines. You should not need to turn the firewall off on either host or guest.

I turned off the Windows XP firewall because DNS or some other port was being blocked. Not sure what.
