Windows7 guests Internet not working after switching host

Hi all,

I will give a short description about what I did:

1. Installed a Windows7 64-bit (Enterprise-Edition) guest on a Windows7 64-bit host.
2. Started the guest and everything worked fine (internet via LAN, audio, etc.), didn't install guest additions, though.
3. Exported the Windows7 guest system and imported the appliance on my MacBook (running SnowLeopard).
4. Installed the guest additions.

I use NAT for networking and face the following strange problem now:
The Windows7 guest detects the network connection and can find all the computers of the network, my host laptop ist connected to (by WLAN). Nonetheless my Windows7 guest tells me "No Internet Access" and I cannot access the internet, although it works on my host Macbook.

I searched the forum, but I didn't find an answer to the problem. It looks to me like a problem of Windows7 itself, however it occured right after I changed my virtual machine host. My audio connection is also not working after the change, although I don't care about this at the moment as I found some general audio issues with Windows7 guest and MacOS host in the forum.

Cheers,
Johannes

Did nobody ever have similar problems and does nobody have a hint where to search for a solution?

Since it can browse your local LAN, it means that NAT is working just fine. You don't give much network information, which is vital when dealing with network issues. It would help if you posted the IP configuration, Host and Guest, What does the troubleshooter in W7 say?

You're right. Sorry for that.

All IP Configurations on both host and guest side are set to DHCP. The Troubleshooter tells me:
"Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)" and it can't fix the problem.

I also looked into my OSX network preferences and there is an Enthernet Connection (en2), which I think wasn't there before. It says:
"Status: Connected
Ethernet Adaptor (en2) has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet.
Configure Ipv4: Using DHCP
IP Adress: ..."

I looked into the VirtualBox Preferences->Network and found one entry in Host-Only Networks:
"vboxnet0 network

Adapter: manually configured
DHCP Server: Enabled"

If I jump into "Edit host-only network", I find an IP address in "Adapter" Tab and some DHCP Server settings and "Enable DHCP Server" checked in the "DHCP Server" Tab.

The IP addresses of the Virtual Box host-only network adapter and the IP address of the Ethernet Adapter in the MacOSX System Preferences do not correspond, though.

When I imported the Win7 guest on my MacBook, VirtualBox also imported the Manifest File together with the appliance. Could this be a reason?

Try to ping the following address from both the host and the guest:

Code: Select all

ping 74.125.77.104
Does that work on both?

Yes, it worked on both.

Then you have to check the DNS configuration. It would appear that the Mac system is using a wrong primary DNS server.

After deleting the en2 Ethernet connection NAT still doesn't work, but for some reason Bridged Adapter works now (didn't before). I'm good with bridged networking. Thank you for help Sasquatch.
