If you want to get to the LAN you have to switch the connection to Bridged or just forget it. NAT is on a completely different segment and will never see the rest of the LAN. Pretty much the reason for NAT is to keep it from being on the same LAN.

I hear you, it's almost time to give up! Shares beyond the Guest machine using NAT alone are however available with full access to all LAN shares through the router and via Places > Connect to Server and a machine/NAS's IP address, then bookmarked for future availability as shown here



To access LAN machines through the Nautilus file browser does require as you have said a bridged adapter.

For me this is a work around with either a bridged or NAT adapter, by entering the address manually through "Connect to Server" for each individual machine/NAS on the network, then you can browse the shares available. Maybe this is the way it's meant to be like you said "it ain't Windows" but there is a feature to browse windows network, it's just not functioning as advertised.
