newbie preliminary questions

Hello
I am looking to run virtual box 3.2.8 on a mac pro 2x2.8 ghz 10 gig ram 10.5.8 as a host and using windows xp office in parallel to run a music synth editor program only available for windows.
could anyone share weather this configuration should work (any known compatibility issues)?
any recommend steps for successful operation? i am just starting work through the documentation but i have looked through the FAQ and the tutorials page(which doesn't have any material on mac hosts.
lastly i read somewhere that usb devices can be run on the host without additional drivers ...(i am unclear on what that means).. what i think i need to do is use two midi interfaces (both of which are usb devices) one interface on the mac os that is my main interface for bussing midi data to and from my external equipment; and a second to buss the data from the program running in windows to my first midi interface. i was planning on having to do that to avoid conflicts from two operating systems trying to use the same hardware at the same time. is that necessary? or could someone kindly elaborate.
TIA
