USB permissions - can't write to a USB modem

Hi
I have a USB mobile broadband modem that works fine under 10.6.
However. I need to flash it with a new firmware but can't do it in osx.
I have tried using my win7 guest but it doesn't allow it - is there a way to give the VM permission to write this kind of stuff to USB? It can read and interact with the modem but I just can't flash it. Thanks
