list of academic users of VB

Post by davismbu »

Apologies for placing this topic in this area, but I don't quite know where *else* to put it.

I've succeeded in getting VirtualBox working sufficiently to demonstrate its potential in terms of virtualizing at least some of our servers down to a single machine. At a smaller university, anything on these lines is worth looking at. But my boss, being rather conservative on such things, is reluctant to move beyond my present proof-of-concept to any real production use, unless he knows of some other comparable institutions using VB to support actual servers. In my particular case, for instance, I'm minimally looking at replacing two or more proxy servers by virtualizing them onto one physical box.

So: the question is: is there a list to be had anywhere of schools/universities/libraries/other institutions who are using VirtualBox in a real production environment? Just couldn't find such a thing. Barring that, if people working at XYZ College, etc. would be willing to hang their name on this topic. I just need to be able to demonstrate that other people successfully use VB in the work setting to run their servers. Thanks.

Does it have to be an academic institute, or may it be a corporation too? If it can be a normal company, instead of a school, you would get more responses. For example, I know that my fellow mod Vbox4me2 uses it at his company. There are other users out here that use it in corporate environments to consolidate physical machines in the same way you are trying to do.

Corporate uses would be fine, but academic sites would be even better, in terms of trying to favorably impress the boss. The boss prefers to use Hyper-V, or barring that, VMware. Well, there's nothing wrong with either of those, clearly. But VB seemed so much easier to use in terms of the scale of what we would be doing that I couldn't see not pursuing it. But pursue I can't, unless I come up with others already doing similar things. Something of a Catch-22, I suppose. I just prefer the simplest possible solution that meets the need, and that's what I thought VB did. It's just a shame there's not an installed user base list, but I've tried to point out why that's not as likely with VB as with, for instance, VMware. My task is to demonstrate that VB isn't just a personal-use and/or hobbyist's item. I don't think it is, and I think it would do what we need. But, I've got to have comparables.

Sasquatch: do you think it would be worth my reposting this and not emphasize the academic part as much? I don't want to belabor what people already slog thru to read. Frankly, I'll take whatever I can get ...

Feel free to adjust your first post here. When you change the subject, you change the topic title. The explanation you have already noted will do just fine, just ask for people who use it in production environments, like schools, corporations and the like. Just broaden the question for the user base.
