I can also confirm that installing the above package in the guest OS seems to work fine, reporting 'Chromium 1.9' renderer. Compiz works as well.

So, that GA package did absolutely nothing for me. Can I somehow force X to run at a certain resolution?

With Ubuntu 10.10 and xorg 1.9? No. They deprecated xorg.conf where you would otherwise put the resolution in. The GA that is in the bug report noted a page back should have what you need. They are experimental though, and installing them can give you a corrupt display before you reboot, which means you have to be able to do a blind reboot right after the GA is done installing. After that, the display should be back to normal.

As for now, if the test GA didn't work for you, just wait for the next VB release.

While searching for the solution to this issue this page was the first google result.

now that 10.10 is release I found installing the vbox x11 package fixed the xorg issue for me.

That is noted here a couple of times before and just like then, I keep saying: NOT SUPPORTED! We don't recommend doing that, OSE is a lot different than the PUEL and even though it works, who knows what kind of issues you're going to have in the long run.

Maybe you guys could look into making sure the API for the GAs is standardized between PUEL and OSE releases, so there won't be problems by that sort of thing... I dunno.

Or even having the exact same GA builds for both... unless GAs play some role in remote desktop or usb stuff...

They all come from the same source, but it's still recommended to use the same version. OSE on Host, use OSE of the same version for the Guest, PUEL on the host, use it's own GA on the Guest.

I think the difference here is VirtualBox only provides the source for the OSE builds that the Distros use. They in turn make their own installers and create the actual build code. In a perfect world and if everyone followed the exact same build instructions they would all play together and not cause problems, but that is not always the case from the way the different Distros seem to build things. Without mentioning names I have seen some problems that have been reported here and Bugtracker that were directly caused by the way the Distro compiled the build. We can only hope that the Ubuntu X11 OSE GAs were built in a way that would not cause a problem in the PUEL based program. This is the reason that I believe it is not really suggested to mix the two. IMHO

Hello, im using Ubuntu 10.10 and i still cant change resolution on the guest mashine.
I installed virtualbox-ose-guest-x11 but nothing...
I removed OSE and installed PUEL and again the same...

Is there anytthing else i can try?

Aah! forget it! Sorry for the spam post.. It was very late and i couldnt think right.. last night i forgot to install GA... i see it now
