Display Refresh

i know my monitor is on 120hz,that doesnt change, im talking about the display adapter being locked at 60hz. alas windows outputs 60hz not syncing up to my monitor, alas choppiness.

I'm not so sure that's how Windows works..

Virtualbox isn't very smooth at moving windows around or scrolling, even on my 8x core Mac Pro with 32GB RAM..

The refresh rate you set in VirtualBox, from what I see as a matter of fact in windows debug files, is OVERRIDDEN by VirtualBox, and is only refreshed when VirtualBoxes own emulator refreshes, which is actually lower than 60Hz..

So, what others have said, yea, they are RIGHT you know.

this is an insane bump, but i have the same question

i have a 144hz display, and virtualbox runs at 60hz. The virtual display is set to 60hz and when I scroll in chrome it's very choppy(to me that is, it's clearly 60hz and not buttery smooth 144hz)

Guest machine is XP, host is win 8.1 x64

Have you read the thread? From the beginning? What makes you think that the "choppy" behavior that you see in your VM is the result of the refresh rate? Seriously. What? Have you considered that it may be that the virtual drivers for your virtual graphics card are not powerful enough? Especially in the 3D area (OpenGL, DirectX)? Try to disable hardware acceleration in Chrome and see if it fixes it...

If it makes you feel better, imagine that the virtual graphics adapter properties dialog says 600Hz instead of 60Hz. In reality the virtual graphics adapter doesn't refresh anything (how could it?), so anything it says about refresh rates is a lie, so you might as well imagine whatever lie makes you happiest.

And, meanwhile, you can install the Guest Additions if you want the graphics to perform better.

Of course I do, just as I did 2 1/2 years ago. Did you subscribe to wake up an old thread, to question if my position has changed or did you have a more specific problem you had in mind?

I have a 980ti and you say that my graphics are very laggy but I have very good graphics in everything except for virtualbox, I have a 144hz monitor and can clearly tell that my VM is running at 60hz. Can you help me please?

There is nothing to help you with the refresh rate. It is not a factor. Your VM is not running at 60 Hz. That number is as virtual, as your virtual graphics card, or your virtual monitor. Your graphics would look exactly the same whether you were in a 60 or a 600 or a 6000 Hz monitor.

If you have any specific questions about graphics performance, you should open a new topic, because this is not one that can address your problems. And be sure to read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance.

I have ran a 144fps tear test video inside and outside of the VM that clearly demonstrate tear inside of the VM, but not outside. This is very clearly a refresh rate issue and not a "virtual" number as you claim. Since other users are clearly having this issue, I absolutely think this topic is appropriate.

No, you do not. Or you're simply refusing to. The fact that there is more than one of you does not make the problem real, as long as you're missing on the basic understanding of how things work. If I gather a bunch of people from ancient Greece, they'll tell me that the earth is stationery and the sun/stars are moving (except a few). That's what they all observe after all. Does it make it true?

You describe a symptom and you are fixated on what the root cause should be. You have been told again and again that the underlying reason is not what you think it is. It is the capabilities (or lack thereof) of the graphics drivers. It is the software vs. the hardware rendering. It is the translation overhead. It is definitely not the refresh rate of the virtual monitor.

And since this topic about the refresh rate is going to keep attracting more deniers, I think that it has had its time and we should let it go peacefully.
