Unusual(!) USB Problem

Post by elroy690 »

Hi alltogether,

I have a Windows XP guest running on Ubuntu 10.04. The VBox Version is 3.2.6 PUEL.

I have gone through all the USB hints, but none worked on my system. I have installed the Extensions for the VM, I have added my User to the corresponding vbox users group, but nevertheless it does not work. Somehow my USB printer gets no connection.

I have noticed one funny thing though, that might help you helping me. The USB mouse works fine, and it does that since I first ran windows. But when I select my USB mouse from the small USB menu on the lower right end of the VBox Window, it freezes and does not work any more, until I restart the VM.

Also, I have tried fooling VBox, started VBox as root and imported the VM in there. There the printer worked fine. Then I imported the installed printer into the user VBox again, and - nothing that surprised me - the printer is installed but did not work again. I see the printer in the USB menu, but the menu item is greyed.

Do you see a solution for my problem?

Thanks in advance,

Martin

Add your login to the lp group on the host

Mice and keyboard are a shared resource and you can not make a USB filter for these or strange things will happen.

Thanks so far. I added my login to the lp group, but unfortunately it changed nothing! :(

Any more ideas about this?

This the same problem I have as well. XP guest on Ubuntu 10.04. USB doesn't work. I don't understand what you mean by saying add login to the lp group on host. Can you explain further?? As to how you do it. Thanks I'm somewhat new at this.

You have the solution. Linux has Groups and Users. Add your User to the Group lp. Look into your Ubuntu System Control for a Tool to manage User and Groups.

I think I did it right. Went to User and groups. And click on to manage groups, found my user name click properties and and checked the box at user name. But still doesn't work. I log in and out on host and guest but no luck. I don't use a user name or password for XP I figure the host got that covered. Did I do it right??? Thanks

@cshaum,
Your profile says you are using the OSE version of VirtualBox which has not support for USB. If you want USB support you will need to install the PUEL version of VirtualBox.

Okay, I downloaded the latest puel verison. Now I have an USB Icon in VM. If you hover the mouse over it. It tells me that no USB device is attached. But if you right click it shows all the devices attached but there all grayed out. I have it enabled. And setup filter 1 through filter 8 It tell me I have 8 active filters if I understood it right it will detect anything and everything and that is what I want. What have I over looked??? Thanks
Does Puel support firewire??

Have you read this thread complete and added the user to the lp group?

And no, firewire is not supported.
