USB SATA HD dock grayed out

I've looked online and through the forums for a solution to this, so I've done my due diligence. Nothing I have tried has worked.
VirtualBox version: 3.2.6
Host OS: OS X 10.5
Guest OS: Windows 7
I have a USB sata hd dock, when I plug in a drive and turn it on the device shows up under USB devices, but grayed out. I unmount the drive in OS X, and it still shows up as grayed out. Restart the VM, same thing. I tried creating a filter for the device too, no success.
