Ubuntu 10.04 and 3D acceleration

Hello. How do you get the 3D acceleration to work on Ubuntu?
I am using a Windows 7 Host operating system running a 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 operating system

I have installed the guest add-ons but it still crashes on me whenever I try to load up something which would normally use 3D acceleration.

Any more information you can share here? Have you read the User Manual and VirtualBox FAQ?

What more infomation would be required?
Sorry, I am a bit of a newb to Virtual machines. And yes I have had a look over the user manual.

We are missing some vital information. Please see the Forum Posting Guide for help providing us the needed information. It's a bit redundant to ask the same thing over and over again ;). Basically, what video card do you have. It's in the FAQ which ones are known to be incompatible.

I can kind of confirm that problem exists

At least for me with following settings:
* Virtual Box ver. 3.2.8
* Host: Windows 7, 64 bit
* Guest: Lunux Ubuntu 10.04, 64 bit (guest additions installed, ver. 3.2.8 )
* Graphic card: GeForce 8800 GTS 640 Mb
* Nvidia driver: 258.96 WHQL (released 2010.07.19)

When 3D Acceleration is disabled Ubuntu is loaded and running fine.
If I enable 3D Acceleration after login screen at the moment the desktop should be displayed I get a GUI crash diaolog (see attachment)

I may provide a VBox.log file if needed, though I havent noticed there any error messages.

Best regards,
Vladimir

interesting addition: restarting host (Windows 7) solved the issue, although I rarely restart Windows just let it go suspend mode, and have never experienced such a problem with VirtualBox before

I assume it may be a problem of new nvidia driver

Think I might not be able to get my virtualbox to preform 3D acceleration full stop

Product Detected: Mobile IntelĀ® 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Current Driver Installed: 8.15.0010.1883

That is my graphics card.

That chipset is fine. I have the same in two laptops and it allows me to run Compiz in Linux Guests. This card does finally have OpenGL support. The 9xx series and older are the only ones that don't have this.
As for the actual 3D, it all depends on what you want to do. Is it Aero? Is it a game that's not older than 3-4 years? If so, that's not going to work in a VM. Aero isn't supported yet and games require more power, something a VM, with it's large overhead, can't give you.

I am trying to get Tuxracer working as a test for the 3D. As well as a 3D program that I have been sent to run in C++ complied through Adjuntu

Sorry for not monitering this thread as much as I should be doing.

Is there anything you can point me in the direction of which is defiantly able to work in 3D on Vbox? Sorry but this is also the first time I have started using Linux too.

Well, I know that Compiz works fine when you have 3D enabled, so that's a first try. Playing a video using OpenGL output gives a fairly obvious result too.

Compiz causes the virtual machine to crash.

Well, I to be honest, I haven't tested 3D with VB on Windows as host, so it might as well be a driver problem. I know that having Linux as host and 3D in the VM, it works just fine. There is also a bug report about this problem. Can't directly find the report for it though, but there is a similar post on Windows Hosts with this problem that has the link to the ticket. Google will also find it if you search for the crashing module.
