Dear all,

would I be ever able to use a .tar-image (taken from a Rackspace CS, the image you get when you download the image from your virtual serer there) together with virtual box and run it?

You mean, restore a system from the tar image? Not unless you have a restore tool which can do that, and which is happy to run from a live CD.

Your question is essentially misplaced. In general, VirtualBox does not provide any tools for creating filesystem images. All VBox provides is virtual hardware. You must use third party software to either install or reproduce a working OS.

virtualbox should be treated just like a real pc would, as mpack says there's no special p2v tools.

i've recreated a physical machine i've backed up using acronis or clonezilla before, just as you would with physical hardware.

i've also rsync'ed a running openvz container on a remote physical box into an minimal openvz template running under virtualbox!
