Not detecting cpu correctly

Post by Gumper »

I recently installed virtualbox on my Kubuntu (Gutsy AMD64) and I'm now trying to install Fedora 8 KDE-x86_64 into virtualbox. When I do this I receive a message saying "This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i1586 CPU. Unable to boot- please use a kernel appropriate for you CPU." It won't continue with the installation.

Can anyone tell me why I'm getting this message? I know that I have an AMD64 cpu in my machine.

The version of Virtualbox that I'm running is 1.5.0_OSE that I installed from the repositories.

Thanks

I believe that you can only install 32bit guest operating systems on a 64bit host so you want just the regular x86 version of Fedora for you install.

That doesn't make any sense to me. So what host do you need to be able to install a 64bit guest? A 32bit host?

Thanks for the help.

You cannot use 64bit operating systems in VirtualBox yet.
You can only use 32bit guests on 64bit or 32bit hosts.

Hi all,

I am a newbie on this and was experiencing the same issue (almost a half day of fiddling with the settings and looking at forums).

Here are my configs that ended up working:

- Host - 64bit host running windows vista home premium.
- had to enable Host BIOS - Enable Virtualization
- VirtualBox v 2.2.2 46594,
--under the General/Advanced tab, I had to check "Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Enable PAE/NX"
--under USB, Enable USB 2.0
- Loaded ubuntu-8.04.2-server-amd64 iso.

Man.. half a day I'll never see again but finally got it to load. For all other newbies, there is also a very good article on "ubuntugeek.com" about how to load this LAMP instance in vbox.

Thanks,
GMV

You know that it's in the VirtualBox FAQ and Manual, for what you need to enable for 64 bit Guests. Enabling USB isn't a requirement though.
Read the Forum Posting Guide before opening a topic.
