API For Host/Guest Communication?

I was thinking about making a helper utility that can support file transfers...I know on other virtualization platforms you can usually talk between host and guest via a proprietary path, is there something similar to that with VirtualBox? I downloaded the SDK already, and I rather prefer to do my own self-paced learning, but I just don't know what to focus on. Thanx in advance!!!
