I have successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my brand new Acer Emachines E525 model laptop. I have Virtualbox 3.2.4 on Windows 7, and then Ubuntu Linux inside that. I have audio input and output working fine in the host OS of Windows 7. But in the guest OS of Ubuntu, only the audio output works, not the audio input. I tried doing a Skype test call and it fails inside the guest OS of Ubuntu. I also tried fiddling with options in gstreamer-properties, alsamixer, and settings control panel, but can't seem to get this to work.
The Emachines E525 uses Windows Direct Sound with an ICH AC97 sound chip.

Re: Cannot Get Microphone To Work on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Oh, heck with it. I mean, the only thing I needed sound recording for was for Skype, and I can just as easily run that from Windows. Since I normally set up an attached LCD panel monitor, I can put Ubuntu in that window and Skype and Windows in another. Since I am a LAMP developer but still need to test on Windows, this is the ideal setup for me. And besides, Skype Beta 2.1 on Linux still doesn't have screen sharing working 100%, but it works fine on Windows 7. And screen sharing is important to me. As well, the webcam and visual screen presentations that I may do need to span both Linux and Windows for demos, so it will work this way.
So, I bailed on the idea of getting audio input working inside Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
