Passing USB smart mouse through to virtual machine

I have a programmable USB mouse and it appears that VirtualBox on Mac is not engaging the device filter I've activated in the settings for my XP virtual machine.

From the VirtualBox control panel I see the filter in the active list "1 (1 active)" of device filters, named "Interlink Ele Interlink RF Rece [0320]", but from the virtual machine that entry in the USB list is grayed out when I click on the USB icon. It is also grayed out when pull down the Devices/USB Devices menu item.

The basic mouse functions of the device are working in both the Mac interface and in the virtual machine, but it is as if the Mac is capturing the mouse and simply forwarding the mouse activity to the virtual machine. The smart functions accessible from XP are not accessible because the virtual machine cannot see the filtered USB device.

So, I think I need to tell the Mac to ignore the USB device so that VirtualBox can pass it through to the virtual machine.

What am I missing?

You are missing nothing. The mouse is a shared resource and you can not set a filter for it or weird things will happen. VirtualBox uses an emulated mouse driver so the mouse integration will work and must use its own drivers.
