Can't get 'Nested Paging' on AMD Machine (V-Box v3.4.2)
VirtualBox Version: 3.4.2 r62467 (guest additions have been installed)
Host OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
Guest OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
Processor: x86 Family 15 Model 107 Stepping 2 AuthenticAMD ~2712 Mhz
CPU-Z program gives following inf. on the CPU:
Name AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
Codename Brisbane
Specification AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+
Package Socket AM2 (940)
CPUID F.B.2
Extended CPUID F.6B
Brand ID 4
Core Stepping BH-G2
Technology 65 nm
Core Speed 2712.4 MHz
Multiplier x FSB 13.5 x 200.9 MHz
HT Link speed 1004.6 MHz
Stock frequency 2700 MHz
Instructions sets MMX (+), 3DNow! (+), SSE, SSE2, SSE3, x86-64, AMD-V
L1 Data cache 2 x 64 KBytes, 2-way set associative, 64-byte line size
L1 Instruction cache 2 x 64 KBytes, 2-way set associative, 64-byte line size
L2 cache 2 x 512 KBytes, 16-way set associative, 64-byte line size
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG, 06/05/2009
Have the following problem with the above detailed VirtualBox and host machine:
I have the following 'System' settings made for the VirtualBox:
VTR-x/AMD-V: 'Enabled'
Nested Paging: 'Enabled'
However, when I start the VirtualBox the 'V' icon (bottom right of the VirutalBox window) which details the status of the hardware virtualisation features shows the following:
VTR-x/AMD-V: 'Enabled'
Nested Paging: 'Disabled'
This, of course, doesn't match with the 'System' settings. The above information is also duplicated if I use the menu item 'Machine\Session Information Dialog'
I have checked the 'pdf' manual installed by VirtualBox and see nothing relevant to this issue other than mention that 'Virutalisation' must be enabled inside the BIOS for the above 'System' settings to work. I have checked the BIOS and find only one setting that seems relevant at the following ('Page') location (with the setting indicated as shown below):
BIOS Page: Advanced Chipset Features\CPU Feature
Setting: Virtualization
Status: 'Enabled' [as I have never adjusted this setting this must be the default]
Which I think suggests that the BIOS is not the source of the issue.
I have had a look through the machine log (most of which in my ignorance means little to me) and see only one item that my best guess would be might have a bearing:
From 'CFGM dump'
00:00:00.405 HwVirtExtForced <integer> = 0x0000000000000000 (0)
The line suggests to me that it may be the case that VirtualBox is coded in such a way that irrespective of the 'System' settings, 'Nested Paging' can be turned off by VirtualBox on launching a virtual machine. (As the line implies there may be a way of 'enforcing' the 'on' setting.)
If anyone could advise on how to get the nested paging working I would be grateful. I am a newbie at using 'virtual anything' so please pitch accordingly.
