vmware 7 with compiz on ubuntu client

I have searched this forum for an answer to this...

I am trying to get openGL and compiz working on ubuntu guest through virtualbox. I have installed guest additions, enabled 3d. I have an intel 965 express chipset family graphics card..thats on one computer..i tried doing the same on the other computer which has radeon x500....when I go to SYSTEM.ADMIN/HARDWARE DRIVERS...It says "no propriety drivers are in use on this system"...am I missing something, am I not doing something I should be doing? Please help! I'm going nuts because I know its possible to get compiz working on VB (where apparently its not on VMWare)...any suggestions GREATLY appreciated!!!!!! :cry:

Guest VRAM?

Ubuntu Version?

Sure you installed Guest Additions without errors? Try again and post the console output from installation here, we have a look.

Just a couple of things, it's all in the VirtualBox FAQ. Your first video card, the Intel 965, does NOT support hardware accelerated OpenGL and that is a requirement for 3D in VB.
The other videocard, well, last support for it was with Catalyst 9.3. Since Windows 7 was released after March last year, it's not very likely the driver supports all features of the card.
Just check the FAQ.

Are you sure?

It definitely supports DirectX 9/Aero effects, so I see no reason why it can't support OpenGL. The hardware is capable.
Any ideas?

It definitely supports DirectX 9/Aero effects, so I see no reason why it can't support OpenGL. The hardware is capable.

That's the difference, most cards from Intel did support DX, but not OGL. Big difference. But I looked it up, and I was mistaken by the chipset, compared to the actual graphical chip in use here. I thought the video chip was 965, which would make my reply valid, but it seems they never made that thing and use the X series with that chipset family and above. That chip, let's say the X3100, should have hardware accelerated OpenGL. I know, because my laptop has this chip and can run Compiz and all just fine on the Host. I forgot about the Guest though, I'm not sure if it worked or not. It's been a while since I turned it on and ran a VM with 3D on it.

Fixedwheel, are you sure that it's running properly inside a guest too? Showing that info on the Host doesn't say much, especially if I compare it to my own Host, which runs on an nVidia GPU. Note the second part where the graphics card is noted, with the OpenGL version. Yours states Mesa with Intel, mine says nVidia. AFAIK, Mesa supplies software rendering only.
