I had a PC that I junked after buying a new Win 7 Dell stand alone PC.

It had Win XP running after an upgrade from Win 98.

I had hoped to use that PC's Win XP upgrade CD within my VirtualBox.
Is that possible and if not what is my cheapest approach for running some old
windows application in my VirtualBox.

FYI: The old Windows application are as follows:
Front Page 98, Quicken 2003...

My question was about the XP Update CD for establishing a VM in VBOX?

If the license is transferable to a different computer, sure. But who are we to stop you breaking the license agreement with MS, right? XP will run just fine. You might need to swap the disc for the upgrade procedure to finish. XP upgrade can be installed clean, no previous Windows version needed, just proof that you have an older one in the forum of an install medium.

You can try to convert the old pc to a new image with http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 56415.aspx

You need an external drive or a network share for the image.

VBOX is able to use the created vhd directly.

I tried to create my Win XP VM but it failed.
The Win XP update CD ask for a copy of the Win OS to be updated from.
It just senses the disk [Win 98 in my case] and continues the install.

However, as VB is installing I am unable to eject the XP Disk temporarily to insert
the 98 CD?

I tried the "Left Command" button and I also tried various Mac OS X software/manual ways of ejecting the
XP CD to no avail.

I searched your Knowledge Base and this forum threads and did not find any help.

I'll post a new thread on Monday to see what the VB community knows of this problem.

If I can trust my memory I believe 98 will ask for the 95 CD to be inserted?

If VB does not have a solution, I think I can get an ISO copy of XP with all 3
Service Packs included. Maybe that will work but I do not currently know how
to do the ISO process.

IMHO you should create ISO images of your XP and Win98 setup CDs and use that rather than the physical host drive during the install. That way you know you won't run into problems (for example) with the VM failing to sense that the CD has changed in the host drive.

As i say: First install Win98. But i think its recursive, he has an 98 Update which wants first 95.
