I have googled now for a while but did not found even a single pre-installed VDI image for (one of) the most popular current Linuxes:
Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop
Is this real?
Almost all links go to
http://www.VirtualBoxImages.com/ but there you have to pay for download.
Any other location?

I can't tell you a location but actually there should be images available for VMware. VBox has full support for the .vmdk format.

Why don't you simply download the LiveCD from Ubuntu and either run it like that or select to install it. Really easy to install.
