Fedora 13: clonehd works; --compact hangs

I'm using VirtualBox v3.2.2 on a Windows 7 Professional 64 host with a Fedora 13 i686 guest. If I attempt to shrink the root fs .VDI file using VboxManage --compact, the new virtual hard drive is the same size as if I use clonehd, but the resulting virtual disk made using the --compact hangs at boot every time where the virtual disk made using clonedhd will boot properly....
The virtual disk made using --compact will mount on another virtual machine and fsck with no errors, but it will not boot.
Yes I have to move the discs around and re-register them with the virtual disk manager but at least it works after that.
I just was wondering if anyone else was having a similar issue or if this was a known problem.
