Help fixing network issue

Host system: Windows 7 x64.
Guest: Fedora 11.

My system was working fine.
Yesterday, I updated VirtualBox, ran all the "important" updates from Fedora, and re-installed the latest version of Guest Additions - as prompted.
Today as I started my VM again, I am unable to connect to the Internet.

The resolution of the VM and the "mouse integration" mode works fine so I assume the Guest Additions are working correctly, but not the network.
I tried both "bridged" and "NAT".

I'm not sure how to find the issue.

Code: Select all

[Nathan@localhost ~]$ ifconfig

Any idea?

Thanks

I see that the interface is eth1. Did you by chance uninstall and then reinstall causing this?
You can try to edit the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules or you can delete the rules and Linux will configure it on the next boot
Usually the interface should be eth0. If this does not work then please post the following
From the host command window (prompt) VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details --machinereadable and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

Hint: you must be in the directory that has VBoxManage to get this to work.

I deleted /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and rebooted, still offline:

Code: Select all

[Nathan@localhost ~]$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:0A:75:A7
          inet addr:192.168.1.21 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fe0a:75a7/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:703 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:250 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:94643 (92.4 KiB) TX bytes:27425 (26.7 KiB)
          Interrupt:19 Base address:0xd020

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
          RX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:1040 (1.0 KiB) TX bytes:1040 (1.0 KiB)
As far as the other command:

Code: Select all

Oh wait!

Code: Select all

[Nathan@localhost ~]$ ping google.com
PING google.com (74.125.19.104) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from nuq04s01-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.19.104): icmp_seq=1 ttl=56 time=21.8 ms

2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1924ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 21.723/21.780/21.838/0.158 ms
Doesn't this mean I have network connexion?
Yet Firefox doesn't connect.
It's set to "no proxy".
I'm gonna play around with this a little more, if pings work, there must be an easy way out ...

Can you ping the host and the gateway?
What about yahoo.com
and 209.191.122.70

Post the results (yes/no) to the above questions

But I can't wget anything:

Can you browse using firefox to places?
The indication is you are having name resolution problems. Still can not be sure though.
If the guest can see and get to anywhere on the Internet then I would discount VBox being your problem though.

I'm not sure what you mean but let me clarify.

On my host (windows), I can browse the Internet without problems.
On my guest (the fedora virtual machine), I can't do anything useful. Only "ping" works.
Can't use Firefox, can't use wget, can't use SVN ...

Should I take this issue to the Fedora forums?

What does FireFox do when you browse to your router's IP (192.168.1.254)? Do you get it's web interface or not? If you don't, but the Host does, them somehow you have a firewall rule on the Guest that blocks HTTP traffic. Check if you have iptables installed and configured, or a program that can set rules for it.
If you're at a company network, check for proxy settings. Look at the Host for it and if it does in fact use a proxy, that's your problem. A proxy is needed to browse the web, yet ping and name lookups will work without it, as designed.

Yes I am able to get to my router page without problem.

Now even more weird, I am also able to access the fedora docs (clicking on the bookmakrs bar): http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fed ... ase_Notes/
and any webppage on that site.

Yet I still can't go to yahoo, google, virtualbox.org, etc ...

My network doesn't use a proxy of fancy firewall.
Now maybe the latest updates to Fedora installed some kind of firewall when I wasn't looking ...

Gentlemen and gentlemen,
I solved it.

I manually set the DNS server to google's "public dns" (http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/). And then it magically worked again.

Now that doesn't really explain much, but it works, so, good enough!

Really it explains everything. Like I said earlier it appeared that you were having name resolution problems. Could be your providers DNS was corrupt or something like that. Not usual but not uncommon either.
