Ubuntu 10.04 vb 3.1.6 vdi doesn't work

Post by mickxx7 »

Hi there,
I recently cleaned up my mashine and installed 10.04, vb 3.1.6, created new guest and used vdi (winXP) that was running on the same pc (dell, latitude 630) until the installation (same vb version).
Now, the xp boots up, login screen comes up, but I can't log in :( , the system is in domain, but after few tries the account doesn't lock up, so I believe it doesn't even
gets checked by AD. Could it be networking problem..? I used to use NAT.

Created another guest with fresh copy of xp (not in domain), tried NAT and also Bridge, both work fine.

I can't use the new copy, cause linux is not supported and the previous winxp was added in domain with condition that if something goes wrong I have to get rid of
ubuntu and go back to winxp...

Gotta get it working otherwise I'll be win luser again... Thnx

Don't you have a local user you can log on with? With that, you can see if you can in fact log on properly and contact the domain. Any errors you get?

Local user doesn't work either, there are no errors, except one weird thing, the capture key (right Ctrl) doesn't work unless I press it
together with left Alt key..

Is there a way to recover/change password in windows under vb..?

Thanx

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor can blank a local password (boot the virtual machine w/ the ISO)

and, bridged network is not possible?

I think I see what the problem might be and to tell you the truth I don't know how to fix it with out your IT department.
When you created a new VM and added the VDI this changed you MAC address and I would bet dollars to doughnuts that is part of the registration process on your domain that your IT department is using. There is also an ID that gets created but I don't remember if that is changed when the MAC address changes.

Anyway this is a thought. I will investigate further on my Domain setup and see what I can find.

I don't think it is the MAC, I use the same MAC for the other guest and that works fine. Anyways, I managed to bind that particular MAC to a IP from the range we use and no difference.
Again the other guest still works...

What exactly doesn't work for the local user? Is there even a local user? When I set up a system for domain membership, I make sure there is a local admin I can use in case the domain is unavailable, especially if I use the system myself. Something must have happened for the Guest OS to go nuts.

The local user didn't work at all, works now.. :)

Here are few logs I managed to recover:

1.Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

2.Could not execute the following script MainStartupScript.bat. The system cannot find the file specified.

3.Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to contact the active directory (0x8007054b). The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Enrollment will not be performed.

and this one:
This computer could not authenticate with \\zzzz.xxxx.yy, a Windows domain controller for domain XXXX, and therefore this computer might deny logon requests. This inability to authenticate might be caused by another computer on the same network using the same name or the password for this computer account is not recognized. If this message appears again, contact your system administrator.

True is that I did use the same comp name for both systems, but it never cause any problems before, changed it for the time being, but no diffrence.

Btw, when I look at the users and groups (as local admin), shouldn't I see there my domain account as well..?

SORTED..

The original accounts (domain) were missing, after creating them things seems to be working again..

Could it be that because I backed up the vdi on external drive, that the accounts somehow got deleted..?
I should mention that it was windows drive (ntfs)

thank you all for help..

The computer accounts are only removed from AD by a system administrator or if you remove the system from the domain. If you make a copy of a system, or install it new and give it the same name without removing the old install from the domain, you will get problems as the old computer account still exists in the AD. Removing the account there, then add the system to the domain will fix that.

Good that you sorted it all out now.

I'm having the same problem. I noticed that I do have virtual adapters on the host. Ifconfig lists only my physical adapters and a loop back. I was hoping to see eth1:avahi, vboxnet0, and vboxnet0:avahi ..

The VM does get an IP assigned and can ping out. In Bridged, the IP looks right (192.168.0.xxx) but a ping from the host (or any intranet pc) to the VM's IP will fail. The working machine is on kernel 2.6.32-24-generic and the one with the virtual adapter issue and AD issue is 2.6.32-25-generic. I have the AD issue using NAT too.. I was actually able to login once or twice! I have no explanation, just chance.
