Direct3D issues

Hi!

I just installed Virtualbox 3.1.8 r61349 on my iMac i7 (Snow Leopard, 8GB RAM, Quad Core, ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB, 27''). The installation of Windows XP worked without any issues and so did the installation of the Guest Additions (in safe mode) including 3D drivers.

This is the main dialog of dxdiag:

The DirectDraw tests all succeeded normally. But when trying to run the Direct3D tests, every test is canceled by an error message. These are the messages in right order:

1) Direct3D 7 Interfaces
Image

2) Direct3D 8 Interfaces

3) Direct3D 9 Interfaces

(sorry they are all German, but the error code should help nevertheless, shouldn't they?)

None of the tests gets the VM to switch to full screen mode. Neither does the screen flicker.

What I am trying to do and what really doesn't work (I don't care for the dxdiag tests but only used them for debugging purposes) is to play Civilization IV. The game starts perfectly and works fast, but all the menu items and movies do flicker in an incredible way. What is really strange is that the background is not flickering at all and the frequency of the flickering changes all the time from several times a second two only about once per 3 seconds.

I made a screenshot from that as well to show what areas are effected. You can find it here. The two areas that are encapsulated in the red borders are flickering. The background isn't at all.

Do you have any idea what the problem might be? Maybe the refresh rate (which I can't change from 60Hz to anything else)? (But if it is the refresh rate why does the flicker frequency change?).

Thank you in advance!!
