hi all, I have a older logitech webcam that I am trying to get to work on my ubuntu guest system, but having problems

here is my setup, windows 7 64bit host running ubuntu 9.10 guest. my webcam is not supported by windows 7, so i think thats the problem for my ubuntu guest setup?, in device manager i have an error beside my camera, so my question is
does my host have to have the drive installed for my guest to run this camera, if not how do i get the camera to work in my guest setup, under devices in my guest if i select usb and then the webcam i get an error all the time "failed to attach the usb device camera (0100) to the virtual machine usb device 'camera" with uuid {477d005b-a3dc-4d97-841f-301c555c75b5}is busy with a previous request please try again later

You can try setting a blank filter in the guest and then unplug and replug the device once the guest is running. If it is going to pick it up that is probably the only way.

ok did this and now i can see my webcam but can not get and video in skype, in skype ther is a button to test video, nothing happens, how do i see if my webcam is working, is there a program i need to install

Ekiga in Ubuntu works for me.
Also MS messenger works in Windows guest although not as smooth since it is a guest OS.
Not sure what Skype uses as I don't use it.

thanks for your reply, i did install ekiga, but there is no section that i see to test your webcam, did a skype between my wife and me can see her on my screen but she can not see me, installed a program called kamoso, it tells me that my camera is on but still no video

Well out of suggestions. Maybe it is just too old. I know it works ( at least with my camera in the host and the guest ) Even with Windows XP as guest and MS messenger as the messenger.

thanks for all your help, just plugged another newer webcam in with the same results my one program tells me the webcam is on but in skype setup to test video nothing

i must be doing something wrong

Run lsusb in a terminal and see it Ubuntu sees it after you have mounted it.
If it sees and mounts it then you should be able to use it. Maybe check the manufactures website and make sure it is not a Windows only device.

thanks for your help, ran that in a terminal and see my cam kisted, but still no video, installed a program called cheese webcam and this program just shows me a blank screen

I have the same exact problem: I only get a blank screen. I have checked permissions and made sure the video device is mounted under /dev/video0 (for example), but I only get the blank screen. Not even changing the resolution shows anything.

Please, reply or post your solution if any.

I'm using the latest Virtualbox release 4.0.1 and I have the USB support enabled.

As comparison, the same webcams seem fully supported with VMware.

Hi ALL,

I am having the same problem with "blank" screen from logitech webcam on guest Ubuntu 10.10.
The Extension Pack

was installed and
/dev/video0 is present. My host is Windows 7.

Did anyone get success with running Logitech Webcam on any guests?
