Vbox 3.1.6 + Ubuntu 10.04 + 3D acceleration = hang

Details:
Windows XP SP3 host on Dell Optilplex 755 with Intel Q35 Express chipset and latest video driver from Dell
VBox 3.1.6r59338 running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (upgraded from 9.10) guest with VBox 3.1.6 guest additions installed, 512 MB RAM, 128 MB video RAM
The guest hangs right after login with an empty desktop (normal purple-ish background) when 3D graphics acceleration is checked. If I click the "X" to close the guest window, VBox prompts me with three choices for ending the session. If I send the shutdown signal, the guest appears to shutdown normally after about 30 seconds.
With graphics acceleration unchecked, everything seems to work fine.
Any suggestions or other setting I might tweak make 3D acceleration work? Might this be a bug perhaps?
Thanks!
