mint linux 7,8,9 wont boot, but other linux can

Post by chuckctv »

OK,
(1) Mint LInux 5 installs and runs perfect.
(2) but as far as the last 3 versions of VirtualBox, i get the same results on later versions of Mint Linux :VirtualBox Crashes

***Now dont say my Virtualbox has the problem, as I know it does not. It does this on 2 different computers running 2 different Windows OS HOSTS.

Linux 7,8,9 Gnome Live Cd's boot fine in VB, they install fine. But once they go to boot from the VB-HD, it crashes VirtualBox.

I also have windows 2k, Win-xp, Suselinux & Mint Linux 5 all made and they all run flawlessly.

Ive also seen other having issues with Mint Linux, but Havent seen my issue.

I honestly prefer Mint linux 7 or 8, if you have a image that you know has a fix, I would love to have it. I left linux host for Windows 7, since I use windows at college and Im taking computer classes, and was worried if I had any issues I wouldnt be sure it was me or VB-Windows. So now im just VB'in it for Linux for now.

any ideas??
Host Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
CPU : Dual Core 2.5 GHz Intel chip E5200
8gb Memory

All Guest OS are 32bit.

Try using google and put this in as a search parameter Mint 7 won't boot in virtualbox site:forums.linuxmint.com
I snooped around a bit and there seems to be boot errors even native, not sure though as I don't use mint what the problem really is.
Guess I will need to install it and see what the problem might be. Something more on my plate.
32-bit or 64-bit?

I just install Linux Mint version 8 without issue and guest additions as well. Everything seems fine to me.
Windows 7 host 32-bit VBox PUEL version 3.1.6
I selected Debian as the base for the install and allocated 512 MB of RAM. Other then that it is pretty much stock.
Since you have the 64-bit version of Windows 7 I would pay close attention to the VT-x/AMD-v, as well as IO/APIC. Try changing them and see if it will continue to boot.

i have 8 gigs of memeory total, so one guest systems I always give them 2gigs.
and i used ubuntu, i thought mint was ubuntu (im sure it is...), but I will try your way, but why make and OS guest with 512meg memory??? all newer OS need 1gig+? but it is true ive seen many use 512meg.. hmmmm?

thanks for testing.

log file (part1 and 2), to big to upload due to forum limits, i split in half (sorry but had to remove some data to make it fit, this was way to big a file. I only removed huge portions of the "AFFFF-00000000" lines 1/4 of the text was lines like this only, i didnt touch anything that had code or data on it. original size was around 300k, you can only upload 114k at a time.

You do have a problem. Make sure that VT-x/AMD as well as IO/APIC is off in the guest settings and try it again.
Does this trash out on the original boot of the live CD?
If this continues then you will need to post a ticket to bugtracker. You will need to find a way to get the entire log to them though. Perhaps compressing it.

no the live cd works fine, only when it goes to restart the first time after you install linux to the harddrive.
right now with the io-apic checked and the pae unchecked (opposite of all my installs), its booting now, just very slow and sluggish. i will just stick with mint 5 i guess, not worth all of this issue. Windows works fine on it, other linux works fine on it and MInt 5 works fine on it. my system just doesnt like mint 7,8,9 for some reason.
VB cant do it all, if it did, then they would sell it :)

I installed Mint 9 successfully and I wouldn't categorize it as slow or snappy, but here are the settings I used for my install:

Operating System: Linux

Version: Other Linux

Memory: 512 MB

System Motherboard: Enable I/O APIC - Not Selected

System Motherboard: Enable EFI - Not Selected

Video: Enabled 3D Acceleration - Not Selected

System Processor PAE/NX - Not Selected

My best advice would be to start out as "vanilla" as you can settings wise, and go from there.

I hope this helps!

PS. I checked the system monitor in Mint 9 as a guest and the CPU was averaging around 19% with 16% being used by the monitor itself.
