Problem updating kernel within VM (PCLinuxOS 2010)

I have PCLinuxOS 2010 installed in a VM on an iMac host (10.6.3 Snow Leopard). The default kernel is 2.6.32.11. Via the guest machine's update mechanism (Synaptic), I downloaded a new version of the kernel within that version (2.6.32.12). Using the Control Center, I fixed the boot list (GRUB) so that the new kernel would be the default one. It boots correctly and 'uname -a' shows I'm running that new kernel.
However, when I shutdown or restart, it hangs at the very end (saying it can't unmount the /home directory) and that's it. I can force quit the VM (Command-Q) and it stops running. I can then reboot the VM and it boots just fine. However, shutdown or restart fails at that end point, every time, under 2.6.32.12.
I reverted back to the default kernel (2.6.32.11 and removed all vestiges and mentions of 2.6.32.12) and there are no issues with shutdown or restart.
I'm wondering if I missed something (even something obvious!) in the update. Could someone (especially someone who has PCLinuxOS 2010 as their VM) give step-by-step directions on what they did (even if it's to a later kernel version - 2.6.33 is in the PCLinuxOS repository) to do a kernel update?
