Network Help!

Here is my setup:
VirtualBox: 3.1.6
Host OS: Windows 7 (amd64)
Guest OS: ubuntu 10.04
While I can see other boxes on my network just fine, I'm having trouble getting out to the internet from the guest OS. The host OS uses a proxy and I have manually configured the guest OS to use a network proxy as well. Trying to ping addresses from the guest OS returns dns errors while trying to load a page in firefox evetually times out. I have tried both NAT and bridged networking configurations for the vm settings.
What am I doing wrong?
