Re: Problems with Ubuntu 10.04 Guest
You can not mix PUEL and OSE. It will cause problems. If you have the PUEL version installed in the host you need to use the PUEL guest additions on the guest.
The guest additions are included with your host install and match the version that you are using. You simply click devices and install guest additions on the top left of the guest window. Then install using the terminal. BUT! You must remove all of the OSE additions first.
See Chapter 4. Guest Additions in your VirtualBox users guide.

A note here regarding the screen problems some folks are having. I had the same thing until I installed the guest additions version 3.1.6 (ose) in ubuntu.
I've done this both through synaptic and using apt-get from the command line. Both worked the same.
I now can resize the screen, use seamless mode, and have full mouse integration. This all works great.
I just can't mount a share.
I think maybe this is something Sun has to address - although I hesitate to complain since this is free software.
What I'd like to do now is move the files I had on my share onto a folder in ubuntu. I was thinking that - if I place the files I needed on a flash
drive, I could copy them from that. SO - I put the files on the flash in windows 7 and added a "usb filter" in the host virtual box options. Then I started ubuntu 10.04 guest.
HOWEVER, I can't see the flash drive in ubuntu. I never tried this before - anyone know how this is done?
thanks so much,
Rich

OH! So - I should be using PUEL (whatever that is...) not OSE.
How do I know which oine I'm using? I saw no references to PUEL in synaptic.
thanks,
Rich

Did you uninstall the OSE guest additions and install the PUEL additions in the guest?
As I said you can not mix these versions. It must be the same in both.

Re: Problems with Ubuntu 10.04 Guest
Window hosts normally use PUEL unless you compiled the OSE version yourself, which seems doubtful.
The PUEL version of the guest additions comes with the host install and has for some time. I told you how to get to them in the instructions above.

I may have - I've done so many thing trying to get this to work, I'm near to being burned out
So - I'll remove the OSE stuff (again) restart virtualbox through windows, in my vbox menu...select "devices->Install guest additions"
I do nothing in ubuntu?

Thanks Perry.
I did what you said and FINALLY everything is working. I feel like an idiot, I was digging too deep for something that Sun actually makes quite simple.
thanks very, very much for your help!!

Re: Problems with Ubuntu 10.04 Guest
Well, setting Compiz effects to none seems to have solved the fullscreen issue, at least partly. Now when I go into fullscreen mode there are gaps at the top and bottom of the VM. The monitor resolution is shown as 1280x675, this is the same as the resolution when the VM is running in windowed mode. I need it to run at 1280x768 which is actual fullscreen.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Andrew

Wait so was there a fix for the full-screen issue while running compiz?

Anyone? Still have this problem. Actually, I did a completely clean install of Xubuntu and it's still there...

Re: Problems with Ubuntu 10.04 Guest
I have 10.04 as guest and compiz works in full screen. It does not work properly in seamless but in that mode you really don't need it.
The only difference that I can see is I use Ubuntu with Gnome desktop and Kubuntu uses KDE which is what you are using. Look in the compiz settings and see if there are any KDE specific settings. Also you don't need any more the 32 MB of vRam as more seems to cause problems.

Re: Problems with Ubuntu 10.04 Guest
No, not using KDE, using xfce4. Xubuntu, not Kubuntu. And the behavior was the same with gnome...
