Differential disk images

Hi all,

I'd like to know if I could get rid of the differential disk images that are growing massively in size. My notebook is short of space now and every half hour I get a "Disk full" warning and then my VirtualBox crashes.
I tried to delete the differential disk images but that stole me the latest work.
I live in the idea that in previous versions VirtualBox just wrote the data directly to the original images. Is there any way to revert to this behaviour?

Thanks,
Pavel

It seems that I finally managed to get rid of the differential disk images.
In version 3.2.6, r63112 I deleted and unregistered the differential images in the Media Manager.
Now my notebook has sufficient disk space.
We'll see if it remains so :)

There must be missing parts to your story. Readers beware: deleting a differencing disk will cause data loss. That isn't always a problem, but you should always be aware of it.

If you want to flatten a differencing disk then clone it, then register the clone and mount it in the VM. Then you can safely delete the differencing disk using File | Virtual Media Manager (never delete registered media using the host OS file manager directly).

Hello mpack,

this is the information I missed! I hope your posting will help people who run into such a trouble as me.
I solved my issue somehow but maybe I'll still make use of your words here in the future.

Is there a link to the documentation or a citation available? Would you or somebody be so kind and post it? I'd like to read it thoroughly to be fully informed.

General user information can be found in the user manual. Other background information, including technical information, is distributed around this site in the form of tutorials and howtos. It's worth the effort to read all of that if you want to get the best out of VirtualBox.

Yes. Absolutely.
