I installed the guest additions, enabled 3d accel and told it to use 128mb of video memory, and I cant get resolution higher than 800x600 (even without the 3d enabled).

Everyother time Ive installed linux guests (on windows and linux) the resolution has never been a problem. I wonder if the nvidia/intel graphics system combo on the new macs is messing things up.

Anyway, anyone have advice on things to try to get good resolution on a 32-bit ubuntu guest and an i7 based MBP host?

edit --- more info: when I do apple+n to get session info, it says it cant detect guest additions.

To install I am doing: devices -> install guest additions, then opening a terminal, cd into /cdrom/ and doing 'sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run'

even more info. Ok, it appears that just powering off the VM, as opposed to shutting it down, causes big problems on the mac.

Shutting down correctly after installing the guest additions caused it to work on reboot. however, now with the guest additions, if you power off the VM and then try and restart the VM, OS X CRASHES! Like, you get a mac BSOD, you have to hold down the power button and hard cycle the machine.

Has anyone experienced this?

also, even with guest additions, 128 MB of video ram and 3d enabled, the compiz effects of ubuntu in the vm are choppy.

enabling io apic in the machine motherboard settings fixed the crashing issue. I dont understand what it does, but it works.
