HELP !!! Lost contact with the machine

Hi ,
Well everything was good on this Ubuntu 9.10 notebook version running from vBox except of 2 problems I couldn't handle:
1)I didn't have / couldn't see a desktop with icons on it (maybe it is this Ubuntu version blame)
2)I lost contact with the mouse after couple of clicks (that's surely problem of ingeration with vBox)
3)The Nautilus/GUI doesn't refresh like in a normal OS although I've tried to increase it's RAM from 1-1.5GB and it has MAX (128MB) Video RAM.
Now I took things a bit too "further" in the display, changed my BG image and marked normal "visual effects".
Since then I cannot see my taskbar and cannot navigate beetween open applications or system tool windows
The only thing I see and control with arrow keys (which don't help because every windows/app/tool I open disappears in the BG and I cannot access it) is shown this added picture (from full screen mode):
1)Are those 3 problems I've mentioned before sounds familiar ?
2)Is the notebook version of Ubuntu is the cause of the problems ?
3)What is going on here ? Can someone help me ?
