Optimizing my screen resolution in Windows 7 guest

My iMac has an ATI Radeon HD 4670 PCIe graphics card, and of course a widescreen display. While running a Windows 7 guest, I have very limited choices of screen resolution, and none of them are widescreen format. So i have wasted real estate on the left and right sides of my guest window. I downloaded the Windows 7 drivers for my ATI video card, and attempted to install them in the Windows 7 guest. However these drivers do not actually cause the ATI card to become detected hardware, and I am left with only a "generic" display driver in Windows 7.

I have searched these forums and FAQs, but I haven't found a clear answer on how to resolve this and optimize my display. I have seen mention of "Additions", but after downloading that package from this site I have no idea which version of it to run or what to do with it exactly. I'm not even sure if that's the best solution for someone like me, or if this resolution issue is simply a limitation of using VirtualBox.

I am tempted to switch to another VM, but I have spent hours setting up my Windows 7 guest and I don't want to start all over. If I could get some step-by-steps on what to do next, I would be grateful. Thanks.

You need to install the guest additions in the guest.

Thanks, but the additions download is a bundle of several different files. Could you tell me which one I would use in Windows 7 guest on a Mac OS X host? Thanks again.

As far as I know, there should be only 1 GA executable for Windows. Can you list the files that you are referring to?

I stand corrected, and this issue is resolved. No download was necessary. I simply went into the VB menu and selected Install Guest Additions. After a few minutes the install was complete and Windows 7 restarted. Pressing the full-screen command automatically filled my monitor screen with the Windows 7 display. I am very pleased with this. Now if I could only get it to recognize my Canon printer, and see my thumb drives without ejecting them first in the Host OS...
