Ubuntu 64-Bit on WINXP 32-Bit Host -> Reboot PC

I 've spent some time reading through the posts (so if I have overlooked any relevant posts, please point me in the right direction).
I have a WINXP (SP3, 32-bit) host, trying to install a Ubuntu 64-bit guest (Karmic Koala). The VBox boots from the CD and displays the appropriate UBUNTU Menu.
When I select "Installation", my monitors go blank and my PC reboots

...
I can install the 32-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 without any issue at all.
I can also boot my PC with the 64-bit Live CD and it works.
Any clue ?
Other system specs:
CPU: Intel Quad Q6600
RAM: 4 GB
Grafik: NVidia 8800 GTS
HD: 2 NTFS drives @ 500GB each, 1 external USB 1.5 TB CnMemory
Cheers,
Andreas

Make sure that your PC bios supports and has hardware virtualization turned on.

Does this affect 32-bit differently than a 64-bit Ubuntu ?

Actually yes. You can run usually run 32-bit guest without any acceleration. But to run 64-bit guests the CPU needs to be VT-x/AMD-v and the bios must support hardware virtualization.
See Chapter 3.2. 64-bit guests in your VirtualBox Users Manual.

OK ... checked the Bios ... can't find any reference to hardware virtualization in the Bios setup menu whatsoever

(I also checked to make sure that IO-APIC is enabled.
So does this mean I'm SOL ?

You may be. There is one last thing that you can try and that is update your bios. Some features might not have been applied yet and some manufactures have been known to add this feature after the release. Be advised though that this is a really delicate area. You must follow the manufacture recommendations exactly as making a mistake can turn you PC into a brick. If you fell like you are not up to the task you are better off leaving it alone or having someone that knows how to do it for you.

PerryG:
Thanks for your reply.
I've updated the Bios (obviously successully, otherwise I wouldn't be able to post this

). But to no avail ... no such option exists in the Bios

...
But if I upgrade my OS (to let's say Windows 7 64-bit), this issue will go away, I suppose ?

Andreas

Probably not. 64-bit native does not require hardware virtualization, just the 64-bit CPU.

Update:
I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 (Beta 2) as 64-bit and it installed fine, no reboot .. no error. Just a nice VM-Ubuntu64
It didn't solve my original problem (which had nothing to do with Ubuntu or VirtualBox) ... My 32-bit WINXP refuses to download any file larger than 4GB (I have some
legal HD video recordings that are just a tad over 4GB and it "chops off" at 4GB.... using a 64bit Live CD, I can download just fine, so no problems with the provider or the host ...). I guess I have a very stuborn 32-bit DLL or something akin that does this ...
Cheers (and thanks for the tips)
Andreas
