Is there any way I can hide the menu bar, short of going full screen?
I just found the option in chapter "9.12 Customizing the GUI" of the 3.1.6 user manual, but, once the menu bar is gone, how do I access the menu bar functionality?
Is it possible to do the 'pop up menu' style (as in how things operate in full screen mode) whilst running in windowed mode?
Hide Machine/Devices/Help menubar?

Use the host+home toggle to get to the menu.

Re: Hide Machine/Devices/Help menubar?
Thanks for the host+home hint.
I tried setting the extra data to turn off the menu bar but once it's gone, host+home does not give me access to it.
Along similar lines, I found seamless mode, but it does not seem to work for me.
I use Fluxbox window manager, when I go to seamless mode, the whole window disappears, never to be seen again, unless I use the VirtualBox startup program to 'show' the VM, then I press host+home to bring up the menu.

Re: Hide Machine/Devices/Help menubar?
Go back and turn the menu back on that you referenced to in 9.12.
Run the below code and it should put it back to normal.
Then in the guest settings under general and advanced take the check mark out of the mini bar.
Then the host + home toggle should work for you.
Run the below code and it should put it back to normal.
Code: Select all
VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/Customizations
Then the host + home toggle should work for you.

Re: Hide Machine/Devices/Help menubar?
Ok.
I want to hide the Menu bar, which usually is displayed at the top. It would be nice to use host-home to access this menu, if needed.
I am using Gentoo Linux, 32 bit, with Fluxbox as my Window manager (fully up to date with Gentoo stable release) using nVidia closed video drivers.
None of the following tests are in 'full screen mode'. Both have been tried on my 'left' and 'right' monitors. Each check requires that the VM be shutdown and re-booted, in order for the changes to be made.
I have unchecked the show minibar.
If I use, I can't seem to get the menu to appear if I use host-home.
If I use, host-home works insofar as it selects the top menu.
If I use Seamless, on my dual head Gentoo System, on my 'right' monitor, Seamless does not work - the VM disappears after some flickering.
If I use Seamless on my 'left' monitor, Seamless does work, although it flickers a little as it sets up and is tough to get back if something else gets focus (I have to use 'show' in the VBox GUI).
If I check show minibar - same results as above.
Using Version 3.1.6 r59338 PUEL version (as opposed to OSE).

Is there a way to hide the Machine/Devices/Help menu bar in full screen mode?
This works fine for windowed mode:but it does not affect the full screen mode.
This works fine for windowed mode:
Code: Select all
VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/Customizations noMenuBar,noStatusBar
