Usb card reader, capture failure

Host OSX 10.6.3
VM 3.1.6r59351
Guest: Windows 7

Recently upgraded from 3.1.4 to 3.1.6 to hopefully eliminate USB capture problems. USB memory sticks are now working much better but an USB card reader that I have is still avoiding capture.
The device in question is:
Product ID: 0x3021
Vendor ID: 0x076b (OMNIKEY)
Version: 3.02
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: OMNIKEY AG
Location ID: 0x06400000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 100

and is used to read drivers records card (similar to a credit card but keeps a record of drivers hours in a truck).
I've tried all the previous tricks (having no details in the specification listing) which worked with the Usb memory sticks but my card reader stays grayed out with an error message showing.

The error message is the familiar one (attached) and shows that OSX has grabbed the device so that it's not available for capture. Unfortunately unlike USB memory sticks there doesn't seem to be a way for me to eject it form OSX thereby making it available for VM.

If someone could give me an idea as to how to get OSX to ignore this device then perhaps VM could capture and start using it.

Please give me more details, I'm not as computer savvy as that.

There is an post about using vboxmanage USBfilter target global action hold (second page?).
What this causes is that VBox will not release to device back to host, but hold onto it until
another VM requests it or VBox quits/ends.
