VB Program Window hangs up after installing 3.1.6

I'm running Windows XP guest on Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.2.
Immediately after 'upgrading' to 3.1.6, the VB program window became disabled. I am able to run Windows from VB, but VB says "WindowsVB: powered off" (even though Windows is running!). All options (setting, start, discard, and drop-down menus) are grayed out, and I can't close or minimize the Sun VB window because the red, yellow, and green buttons are also gray -- so it just hangs on my desktop.
I tried shutting down the program. When I shut down Windows, I got a message on VB saying "Virtual machine 'WindowsVB' has terminated unexpectedly during startup." I clicked 'details' to reveal:
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Machine
Interface:
IMachine {99404f50-dd10-40d3-889b-dd2f79f1e95e}
Can anyone suggest a solution? I thought about uninstalling VB, but I don't know how to backup my files on Windows.
[I revised my earlier post to try to make it clearer.] Thanks for any help I can get!
