Shares dont show on guest

Hello,
I searched and tried all the options I found and still cannot get the shared folders to show on the virtual machine. The host is running OSX Server 10.6 Snow Leopard and the guest is Windows XP Pro SP3. I went into the folder options and set it to classic view and still nothing?? They should show in the My Network Places right? I dont see any Virtual Box listed there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Attached is a screen shot Thanks, Glen

Oops, this should have been posted in Virtual Box on MAC Hosts. Could an admin please move it for me? Thanks and sorry.

I also use Snow Leopard as a host for a Win XP guest. The last time i used Virtualbox under Tiger the Shared folders showed up on the guest. But this time they don't. I use version 3.1.6 of Virtualbox with the GuestAdditions for this version.

So what happens when you click on the little folder icon with the plus symbol in the Shared Folders dialog? Doesn't it come up with an Add Share dialog where you can use Other in the Folder Path field to navigate to your shared folder and choose it? VB won't let you share a folder with a space in the name, so rename the folder if it contains a space.

Yep, its sure does. I also renamed the shares so that there are no spaces and still the same issue??

In my tests, you don't have the change the whole path to have no spaces, it's just the folder that's shared that needs to be spaceless.
When I look at the tree under My Network Places on my VM, it shows everything your screen shot shows, except it has an extra entry between Microsoft Windows Network and Web Client Network that says VirtualBox Shared Folders.
Why do your shared folders all say Read Only? Are these shared folders on the local hard drive or are they on the network? According to a site moderator, "If you are trying to actually read network shares you need to be using bridged or host-only mode and be in the same workgroup with the permissions setup to allow sharing and access."
And time for the obvious question, are you sure that the Guest Additions installed properly? That is, when you look in the Windows task bar, and hover the cursor over the little VirtualBox icon, does it say Guest Additions 3.1.6? I just ask because the last time I updated, I noticed that my Guest Additions hadn't been updated since a couple of versions back, and I could swear I always updated them first thing after updating VB. If it's the right version, you could try uninstalling it and then re-installing it just to see if that fixes the problem.

I suppose that the guest additions are installed properly since I had never installed the virtual box prior so the version I am using is the latest version. I have used Parallels and Fusion in the past and I'm familiar with virtual machines, however this is my first time using VB and maybe I did something wrong. I will check it again tomorrow when I get back to the server. I will also try re-installing it to see if that fixes the issue.
The reason it says read only is that when I created the shared folder path there is an option box that you can check to make it read only and I checked it. I did another one without it checked and still the same thing. I also tried checking the make permanent box and leaving them unchecked so they show as transient folders and still no dice. The only thing I'm missing is the VirtualBox Shared Folders in the My Network Places. Thanks for the suggestions though, I will try it out tomorrow.

At my computer the things look similar to dopalgangr:

- the virtual machine with shared folders dialog
- Bildschirmfoto 2010-03-31 um 10.31.15.png (113.12 KiB) Viewed 3033 times
Is there anything else that i have to keep in mind?

I'm running VB 3.1.6 under OS X 10.5.8. I can see the Read-Only check box, but I don't see a make permanent box (and it's not mentioned in the user manual). I wonder if that's something that only shows if you have OS X 10.6. I also don't get the Transient Folders in the folders list. Maybe not seeing the Shared Folder is a glitch when running under OS X 10.6.

Well I didnt have guest additions installed properly (actually not at all)

RPMURRAY you need to install this once the guest machine is up and running. See the following:
