I'm trying to install Microsoft Money 2004 on my Virtual Machine (Vista) - I went to "My computer" and clicked on the CD drive, and it gave me tons of options, but none worked to start the install. Then the next time I tried, my money disk didn't even show up in "My computer", instead it only had "Virtual Box guest addition" and options for that install and setup. I went through that, thinking it was going to lead me to the money install, but it didn't.

By the way, I ran this same software with Vista on my PC and it worked fine.

What am I missing??

Insert your CD/DVD into the drive.
Under the Devices menu at the top of the screen, choose CD/DVD Drives > Host Drive ...

It will have the name of the CD/DVD drive after the words Host Drive. At this point, if autorun is set, the installer will come up. If that doesn't happen, then check in My Computer and see if the CD/DVD is now mounted and continue from there.

I have all sorts of options when I double click on MS Money (after it's in my CD drive). One is autorun.exe and another is autorun.inf. I tried the .exe file and it opened a textedit page with all sorts of mumbo jumbo characters. I have a whole slew of other options for what to click on in MS Money, but any I've tried don't install the program. Please help!

Sounds like you're trying to install it on the OS X side. Have you tried starting the Vista guest you created, following the instructions in my previous reply and then installing it in the Vista guest?

One more question, where does the file that I work on in MS $ back up TO? Just wondering if that file would be backed up in my Mac Time Machine on the Mac OS side?

The whole Vista guest you created, along with any program you install in it (like Microsoft Money) and any files you create, are stored in a vdi file on the path:

Users/<your account>/Library/VirtualBox/HardDisks

If you backup the whole VirtualBox folder which also contains the Machines folder that stores the information about your Vista setup, then it would backup your whole Windows environment.There are two drawbacks to this. One is that you need to shut down your Vista guest and quit VirtualBox before you make the backup (so that the vdi file is not open), and the other is that because it's backing up the whole Vista environment, it's going to be pretty big (on the order of several gigabytes). The reason you would need to shut down the guest is because some backup programs don't backup open files that are in use.

A way you could get around needing to back up the whole guest would be to create a Shared Folder, and store the files you create in it. Because the shared folder is seen on both the Vista guest and the OS X host, you could then just back up the shared folder from the OS X host side.

OK, I'll have to go look up how to create a shared folder again.

I've got my weblog posts on my Vista set up as "shared", but now don't know where to find that file on my Mac to make sure it's being backed up in Time Machine???
