Is it possible to load the guest OS from a bootable Ubuntu UFD? The source options given were CD/DVD or floppy and neither would boot in the VM.

You have to manually edit the .xml files and change its(the VM) location.

I'm sure the reply means something to an expert, but for a beginner you might as well have replied in Dutch.

@Murgatroyd,
Let me go at this a different way. Do you have the VirtualBox program installed on the computer or are you wanting to run the program and the virtual machines from the USB device?
If you are trying to run VirtualBox from a USB device that is not supported here.
If the Virtual Machines are on a USB device and you have the VirtualBox program installed on the computer. You need to create the Virtual Machine on the computer and when asked to create a new HDD tell VirtualBox to use an existing one and point it to where the virtual machine is. (this will run slow, at least 50% slower then native).

I don't think dutch would have made a difference

but have a look on your harddisk, locate virtualbox.xml then you're close to the machine.xml file, these are plain text files, when VBox is not running you can edit them with notepad and change the path of where your VM disk resides.

I sounds like he wants to install the OS for the VM from a bootable USB drive!
